Thirty stakeholders around the table: the solid waste workshop
What an open workshop surfaces when you bring together the whole waste ecosystem of Mauritius.
Mautopia co-organised with the Charles Telfair Centre a workshop on 'the issues for a circular economy in solid waste management in Mauritius', bringing together around thirty strategic stakeholders: avoidance, reuse, collection, recycling and awareness.
The workshop sat within the implementation of the national strategy for waste recovery and the circular economy roadmap — the aim being to make the upcoming source separation regulation, expected in 2026-27, work, and to reach the target of diverting 70% of waste from landfill by 2033.
Four needs emerged: a structured local recycling ecosystem, a clear and incentive-based regulatory framework, stronger cooperation between institutions, and the central role of education and citizen responsibility.
One finding keeps returning in our workshops: trust is not a precondition for collective work, it is the outcome. You do not convene people who already talk to each other — you convene those who do not, and you leave with a record people can challenge.
